Another beautiful day in Corrales

Morning in the Bosque

Yesterday I walked on the bosque trail beside the acequia (earthen irrigation ditch) that runs for at least 30 miles near the river. Lots of people were out there with their kids, dogs and horses before the day heated up. Acequias are filled with water from the Rio Grande and some ground water. From there it is managed according to centuries-old water rights passed down through generations of land owners for each parcel.

Micha and Ernesto
Morning at Micha and Ernesto's began with strong coffee outside in the shade, and then I worked in the garden with them before the sun got too hot. Their neighbor has a tree service and dropped off a load of mulched tree limbs which we spread over parts of the backyard. Their garden will be included in a tour on Saturday. Last year they won first prize for creating a whole garden out of recyled materials. They've made a lovely permaculture environment from rescued plants, rocks, wood, tile, and found objects. When they moved here 2 years ago the yard was pretty much "dead" and now it's a haven for hummingbirds.

I've been hanging out at the Corrales Community Library and using their secure wi-fi to get this blog up and running with the help of Meg who is a teen volunteer at the library. What a great place! Just inside the front door is a koi pond, and there was a big group of kids and parents here for morning storyhour.
